What to Do After a Window Tint Ticket

Fix-it ticket? Have the tint removed and verified to avoid the fine.

If it’s a regular ticket, removing the tint won’t cancel it, but it will help avoid future stops.

Is Long-Time Tint Still Okay?

Having a dark tint for years doesn’t make it legal. Minnesota’s 50% limit has been in place since 1985.

Since 2010, installing illegal tint without an exemption is a misdemeanor, and enforcement is now active.

How Do I Check If My Tint Is Within Legal Limits?

If you're unsure about your tint percentage, visit a shop. Most will test it free with a meter to see if it’s within legal limits.

What’s the Legal Tint Limit in Minnesota?

Minnesota law requires all windows to meet the 50% tint limit. (Includes the back for passenger vehicles).

Shops haven’t been allowed to install darker film since 2010 without an exemption.

Are There Any Exemptions?

Medical exemptions are allowed with a valid prescription. Even then, your car may get pulled over, so keep the document in the glove box.

Frustrated? Want the Law Changed?

You’re not alone. Minnesota’s tint law is stricter than most states, where a 35% limit is more common. This modest increase allows for safe visibility while providing benefits like heat rejection and UV protection.

If you believe the current law is too restrictive, contact your state legislator and make your voice heard. Help advocate for a change that aligns with national standards and balances safety with driver preference.
