Featured Projects Example Case

When people picture a dream home on Lake Minnetonka, they often imagine sweeping water views, elegant architecture, and interiors filled with warm woodwork and cherished artwork. A stunning custom home in Shorewood, Minnesota checked every one of those boxes. But those same expansive windows that delivered incredible lake views also introduced a serious problem: intense sunlight, heat buildup, and the risk of fading furniture, fabrics, and artwork.

This project highlights how residential window film installation can protect high-value interiors while preserving the natural beauty of a Minnesota lake home.

This Lake Minnetonka home featured large window walls facing the water. The architecture emphasized natural light and unobstructed views, but the result was severe glare and heat exposure during peak sun hours.

The Solution: LLumar Vista Window Film

After evaluating the home's exposure and window orientation, Solar Shield recommended LLumar Vista window film.

High-performance architectural window films provide multiple layers of protection:

  • 99.9% UV rejection
  • up to 70% solar heat rejection
  • reduced glare
  • preservation of natural outdoor views

This allows homeowners to maintain the aesthetic benefits of large windows while dramatically improving comfort and interior protection.

Because the home sits directly on the lake, glare from sunlight reflecting off water surfaces was a major factor in the product selection.

Installation Challenges: French Pane Windows

One of the most complex aspects of this project was the window design.

Many of the windows featured divided-light French pane grids, meaning each visible square was an individual pane rather than a single large piece of glass.

What appears to be a single window from a distance may actually consist of nine or more separate panes.

Each pane requires:

  • individual film cutting
  • precise edge alignment
  • careful installation to avoid bubbles or imperfections

Because of the sheer number of panes, the installation required a full crew working on-site for nearly two weeks, significantly longer than typical single-day residential installations.

Precision was essential to ensure a seamless finished appearance across hundreds of individual panes.

Choosing the Right Tint Level

Selecting the correct tint level was an important part of the project.

For most rooms, Solar Shield recommended a moderate tint level that would reduce glare and heat without darkening the interior spaces.

However, certain areas of the home experienced more intense sunlight exposure:

  • the office
  • children’s bedrooms
  • the master suite

In these rooms, a slightly darker film was installed to provide stronger glare control.

At first, the homeowners were concerned that darker film might make the windows appear too tinted.

After discussing the visual effects of modern architectural window films, they agreed to test the darker option in select areas.

Why Lake Homes Need Stronger Glare Control

Homes on Lake Minnetonka face unique lighting challenges.

Sunlight reflecting off water surfaces dramatically increases glare levels. During winter, snow and ice create similar reflection issues.

This results in:

  • amplified sunlight exposure
  • increased interior heat gain
  • stronger glare during peak sun hours

A lighter window film may block UV radiation but often cannot fully address glare and solar heat.

For lakefront homes, a carefully chosen tint level often provides a much better balance of comfort, protection, and visibility.

Results After Installation

About 18 months after installation, the homeowners reported several noticeable improvements:

  • interior rooms remained comfortable even during bright afternoon sun
  • glare off the lake was dramatically reduced
  • furniture, artwork, and wood finishes were protected from fading
  • hot spots within the home were eliminated

Interestingly, the homeowners eventually preferred the areas with the darker tint level.

After experiencing the difference in comfort and visual clarity, they requested that Solar Shield return to replace the lighter film in other areas with the same darker tint.

This is a common experience with residential window film. After a short adjustment period, many homeowners find that properly selected films actually improve the clarity of outdoor views by reducing glare and eye strain.
