The Solution: LLumar Vista Window Film

After evaluating the home's exposure and window orientation, Solar Shield recommended LLumar Vista window film.

Installation Challenges: French Pane Windows

One of the most complex aspects of this project was the window design.

Many of the windows featured divided-light French pane grids, meaning each visible square was an individual pane rather than a single large piece of glass.

What appears to be a single window from a distance may actually consist of nine or more separate panes.

Each pane requires:

• individual film cutting
• precise edge alignment
• careful installation to avoid bubbles or imperfections

Because of the sheer number of panes, the installation required a full crew working on-site for nearly two weeks, significantly longer than typical single-day residential installations.

Precision was essential to ensure a seamless finished appearance across hundreds of individual panes.

Choosing the Right Tint Level

Selecting the correct tint level was an important part of the project.

For most rooms, Solar Shield recommended a moderate tint level that would reduce glare and heat without darkening the interior spaces.

However, certain areas of the home experienced more intense sunlight exposure:

• the office
• children’s bedrooms
• the master suite

In these rooms, a slightly darker film was installed to provide stronger glare control.

At first, the homeowners were concerned that darker film might make the windows appear too tinted.

After discussing the visual effects of modern architectural window films, they agreed to test the darker option in select areas.

Why Lake Homes Need Stronger Glare Control

Homes on Lake Minnetonka face unique lighting challenges.

Sunlight reflecting off water surfaces dramatically increases glare levels. During winter, snow and ice create similar reflection issues.

This results in:

• amplified sunlight exposure
• increased interior heat gain
• stronger glare during peak sun hours

A lighter window film may block UV radiation but often cannot fully address glare and solar heat.

Results After Installation

About 18 months after installation, the homeowners reported several noticeable improvements:
